Working methods According to the Statutory Law of the Mexican Congress, the Committee of Human Rights is constituted by the Senate, in order to enable the latter to fulfill its responsibilities in relation to human rights by ensuring fully informed discussion and debate. Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee of Human Rights stays in contact with the Committees of Equity and Gender, Foreign Affairs, Multilateral Organisms, Justice and Legislative Studies.
Relations with external bodies The Committee of Human Rights has formal relations with organizations and academic institutions. Together with the Committee of Justice and Human Rights of the House of Representatives (Cámara de Diputados) and the National Human Rights Commission, it contributes to the analysis of, and diffusion of information on subjects on the national agenda such as the fight against torture, migration, child prostitution, trafficking of persons, etc. Also, the Committee of Human Rights of the Mexican Senate has informal contacts with the main national and international organizations concerned with human rights, and the protection of women and children, migrants, handicapped persons, etc.
Subjects dealt with Recent discussions in the Committee concerned migrants; trafficking of persons; mutual cooperation in criminal matters and prosecution; the installation of offices for the protection of human rights on the Mexican borders; the Committee also supports citizens and NGOs before the executive and judicial branches when their human rights have been violated, and has received the visit of several officials of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
